Subaru Confirms a Forester Hybrid Is Coming For 2026

Both the 2024 and 2025 Subaru Foresters have the same 2.5-liter normally aspirated flat-four engine. But soon, its range of powertrains will grow. Subaru said that the 2025 Forester will have a hybrid model a year after it comes out at the L.A. Auto Show on Thursday.

“The all-new Forester will go on sale with [internal-combustion] engines at first, but a next-generation hybrid Forester will come out in another year,” said Subaru CEO Atsushi Osaki at the launch of the car. “This will be the first-ever Subaru Forester Hybrid, it represents the next step in our new electrification plan, with more electrified models to follow quickly.”

In Europe, Subaru did sell the last version of the Forester with an e-Boxer hybrid powertrain, so this won’t be the first Forester with an electric powertrain. At the reveal news conference, the company didn’t say anything else about the powertrain.

There aren’t any hybrid Subarus in the U.S. right now, but a Crosstrek plug-in hybrid should be here soon. The Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Kia Sportage, and Hyundai Tuscon are all big competitors to the Forester. All of them offer hybrid powertrains, and all but the Honda also come as plug-in hybrids.

When does the 2025 Subaru Forester come out? Subaru says it will be in stores next spring, so we think the hybrid will come out for the 2026 model year. It’s not too soon, since automakers are putting more emphasis on hybrids as part of the larger move toward electric cars.
